Danaca Design – STATEmeant jewellery

A call-for-entry for the jewellers of the world with something to say.

For all y’all who saw the Ring Smackdown on the Danaca Design Instagram feed earlier this year, you can phase out for a minute. You need no introduction to the exhibition concept that I’m about to try and explain. You can just head to Dana’s gallery site and enter your statement piece and wait for your jewel to hit the Instagram feed and have it reign supreme or be bundled out of the competition in early voting. It’s democracy – no shame in losing as there’s lots of amazing artists out there with lots to say and time to spend sayin’ it right now.

For those who that last paragraph was a bit of a head-shaker, here I go…

1/ you enter your jewellery work appropriate to the theme* into the show by October 5th, Pacific time, with a retail price under $1600 USD and nominating a charity to receive 1/2 the sales price when you sell the piece

2/ get through jurying by the esteemed Keith Lewis and Nancy Megan Corwin (love both of them, great makers, teachers and humans)

3/ watch your piece come up against a reasonably matched piece on Instagram, then convince the internet to vote for it

4/ repeat as your piece goes through different rounds and ends up in the quarter finals, the semis and then THE FINALS!

5/ Win a democratic election backing a candidate that intrinsically means something to you! And/or sell the work, benefit a great cause, get a little cash in your pocket and send the piece off to its new home 😉

*STATE│meant is an opportunity for you to speak out on challenging subjects that are significant to you, with a powerful piece of statement jewelry. Two jurors will select a minimum of 30 pieces, in six categories: brooches, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and headpieces. The selected work is to be sold in our online gallery in support of the non-profit group of the artists’ choosing. Starting in mid-October, each piece will compete on Instagram for best in category and ultimately best in show. The competition will be by popular vote and with the winner announced November 4, 2020. No electoral college here… These are unprecedented times…got something to say about it? Now is your chance!

Connexions is coming

Connexions showcases new contemporary jewellery works by Australian artists Emily Beckley, Fatemeh Boroujeni, Melissa Cameron, Blandine Hallé, Eden Lennox and Sultana Shamshi. It debuts at the Parcours Bijoux International Triennial in October 2020 at Galerie Assemblages in Paris, France, then travels to the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial in Perth, Australia, in 2021.

For those of you in Sydney head to Bridget Kennedy Project Space TONIGHT! for her year-end celebrations, and you can bag yourself a very rare ‘73’ pendant. They’re also available at Bilk in Canberra (and they have a few new pieces from me in their current ‘White Christmas’ show which opened last Saturday), at Bini in Melbourne and at Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh.

The pendants commemorate the 73 lives lost to gun violence in the USA on 1.1.2017. 

Attention Enamellists!

Thus far I have collected scant new items for the The Enamelist Society (TES) newsletter, aside from the wonderful news that Helen Aitken-Kuhnen has received the President Award in the 52nd International Exhibition of Japan Enamelling Artist Association.

So, if you in an upcoming exhibition; have you seen a cool collection; are leading a workshop; doing a residency, or are in the know about some enamel event that needs more media coverage, then…

Exhibition – IMAGINE on tour

The Boris Bally coordinated exhibition IMAGINE Peace Now has continued to gain relevance as it has toured the USA. It now makes its home at Radius Gallery in Santa Cruz, where Ann Hazels, the director, has made the bold move of showing it in time for the midterm elections in the USA. We are all of us, here in the rest of the world, crossing our fingers for you my USA people.

Global Enamel News

Brace yourselves Team Enamel.

It’s Global Enamel News time once again. My deadline for copy is next Wednesday and I’m running a little late on the round-up, so if you have an enamel story to tell, I’ll take it right up to midday of that date.

Is Wondernamel happening at RMIT? I can find nothing on the web this far out, but someone must know? Will your end-of-year student shows have enamel in them, Australia? In fact, do you have a Christmas/holiday exhibition in the works, Canada? If so, please drop me a line – blog@melissacameron.net

This won’t publish until October, and as I’ve complained before, finding venue and date info of practically anything more than 2 months out is tough (except maybe airline, or Hamilton, tickets,) so I’ll take conjecture.

At this stage I have a document that has the second set of dates added to the With Other Eyes exhibition, so I’m faced with the possibility that this will become a creative writing exercise about the chipped enamelled butter dish that well-known feminist enamel person Marissa Saneholtz sent me last month. There’s a lot to say there, sure, in fact it could be quite a story, but maybe the Enamelist Society Newsletter is not the best audience for that.

Yes, you read right, I am now in charge of Global Enamel News. [GEN]

Should I be in charge of GEN? No, no I shouldn’t be in charge of GEN, but this is the current world order, and so we’re all going to make do, as best we can. On that note – I NEED MORE NEWS!

But before I really start to beg, lets have a quick debrief of what have we learned since last time;

1/ the deadline that I have to deliver my email listicle to The Enamelist Society [T.E.S.] news desk (what they choose to then call my listicle is their business, you hear… much in the same way that I, just then, made up that they have a news desk – see, two can play at this game, T.E.S…) is about 2 months before the new issue of the T.E.S. newsletter will hit inboxes. Ya dig? I’m going to need as much warning as you can give me.

2/ some links make it intact through the vagaries of publication, some don’t. Next time I will endeavour to make the links small enough that they remain click-able despite the PDF-ing process. If you can give me a shorter link, I’ll gladly take it.

3/ T.E.S is not afraid to publish material that is post-current. I’ll still pass it on, if you give it to me, so I guess it’s up to you if you want to read old news. Do with that intelligence what you will.

4/ I am clearly not afraid to fill my allotted space with self promotion. (I’d have said shameless, if I could say felt no shame, but hey, raised in organised religion, what choice do I got?) PUH-LEASE give me something else to work with. Please! I’m pleading, and that’s awfully close to begging, yeah?

OK, I WILL BEG. *if you don’t mind, picture me on my knees, right next to you, right now, pouting and wailing in a cracking voice*
