Me-namel!

Enamelling is a great way to protect jewellery made from mild steel and is easy to master. Come join me in a weekend workshop at Pratt in Seattle to learn the skills to turn your rusty recycled bits and bobs into beautiful and unique jewels.

Come to Pratt in Seattle for a weekend of enamelling with me! We’re running the ‘Liquid Enamel for Steel and Copper‘ (at this stage you’ll have to scroll to the bottom of the link for the full details) weekend workshop again on the 9th and 10th of April in the very well appointed Pratt facility on Capitol Hill.

What is there to say about this workshop? Well, there’s a bunch of cool techniques that don’t fly with using regular powdered enamels that are great options to convey meaning and beauty with liquid enamel; the kinds of tricks that you can see used in cake decorating, clay manipulation as well as glass painting are all up for grabs with this water-based medium. And then there’s my trick of creating a pair of earrings for everyone in the class to enamel from a single tin-can lid… How do you do that, I hear you ask? Bring along a pair of ear-wires and find out!

No prior enamel experience necessary! Bookings through the link above 😉

See yas there!

slow… slow.. slow. FAST!

Been makin. Yup, that’s why it’s been quiet. Been travellin too – check that out on Instagram 😉

Glass Bead Neckpiece

Neckpiece in stainless steel, glass beads and titanium. 2016
Neckpiece in stainless steel, glass beads and titanium. 2016

I have been working on the same piece now for over a month, and while it’s made it very easy to get up in the morning and know my routine for the day, steady progress does not give the same emotional satisfaction as finishing a work. So today I got up early and made six pieces before lunch – in three hours and 45 minutes in fact. (I realise that’s very specific. Have you seen my work?!)

After weeks of same-same, that was some satisfying action!

Suffice to say, they’re just little tidbits, which I’ve already delivered to Danaca Design here in Seattle. If you’re after some inexpensive earrings or neckpieces, head on over to the U district! Dana also took delivery of some bigger and more fancy pieces too, if that’s more your style 😉 This was my first time welding tiny titanium links through some of my stainless laser-cut forms, and I decided that a little glass bead would top each section off nicely. The two colours indicate the different sides of this neckpiece.

Nuthin fancy, but I like it. There will be more of these beads 🙂

Meanwhile, on the AJF website…

More writing, by me, and by others, available elsewhere…

I’ve had the rest of my Material Concerns series – a bunch of photos with tiny descriptions bot by me – published in the last couple of weeks.

Material Concerns: Seeing Light through a Handmade Skirt

Material Concerns: A Thai Surprise

If my writing is not to your taste (fair enough, you just come here for the links and images, I get it…) there’s a lovely little piece by our fearless leader, Ben Lignel, about what it’s like to calculate one specific aspect of his job. What can I say – I feel you Ben.

Deadlines December 2015

Da daa daaaa…. Deadlines!

I made it! It’s still December where I am! Here are your December deadlines, folks!

Savour this post – if you’re the sentimental type – as the time has come for me to leave shouting about deadlines to the experts/organisations that we all pay money to, to put these details out for us.

As I’ve mentioned before, but permit me one last time… Here’s most of the places I find this info. Good luck!

  • Artist Trust – Washington State, mostly
  • Juried Art Services – o’course they only know the deadline’s they’re operating
  • crafthaus – there you have to be a member (at last check it’s $75/year), but Brigitte publishes all the calls that get sent to her, and members post their own
  • Sign up to the newsletter of your favourite/local gallery, or to the blog of regularly occurring symposia/conferences, like the annual ECU symposium that always brings a wealth of opportunities.
  •  CaFE – Call For Entry site. Check out the site and sign up for email updates. America focused. (I’ve given up re-listing appropriate deadlines from their newsletter – it’s just too long…)
  • In the UK? Sign up to the benchpeg newsletter,  professional jewellery news, delivered weekly. Euro/Britain focused.
  • Klimt02. Newsletter. Epic site. Deadlines.
  • Snag’s Springboard – you can get that in an RSS feed, so each new entry will come straight to your chosen portal. America focused.
