In the Studio with Radical Jewelry Makeover: Webinar Series
A couple of Fridays ago, I got up pre-dawn (just before 6am, AWST) to be online for the second in the series of “In the Studio” webinars hosted by Susie Ganch for the Community for Ethical Jewelry. For this series, Susie has been hand-picking artists who have had a long engagement with the Radical Jewelry Makeover project to talk about their practice, their reasons for engaging with Radical Jewelry Makeover and the change in mindset and works that result from focusing on the ‘recycle’ part of the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle,’ trio – unquestionably THE pyramid of our age (farewell food pyramid…)
As an artist who has been working with Susie for 12 years – since her invitation to be a guest artist at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014 – it’s great to once again to have reason to engage with her mission and the cohort of talented artists and educators she has gathered around her to spread the word, the recycled jewel hauls, and the exhibition and audience building opportunities farther into the world.
Thus far there have been two seminars, and lucky for those of you not keen to get up early like me (hey, Boorloo/Perth is in an awkward opposite-hour for them, I get it – we gather at 6pm US East Coast time, a much more reasonable hour for the northerners amongst us) or who have missed out on the first half of the presentations, the wonderful team at CEJ have your back:
Episode 1 with artist panel Curtis Arima, Melissa Cameron, Sarah Holden and Taylor Zarkades King.
Episode 2 with Andy Lowrie, Jina Seo, Kathleen Kennedy, and Sarah Parker.
We’re pausing for the northern summer season (I don’t have to get up early mere days after the winter solstice, phew…) and will resume on the first Thursdays for September and October, so there’s time to check in on the previous eps before new ones join the chain. To register and for updates check in with the Webinar page on the Community for Ethical Jewelry site, and if you’re keen to see some of the output form the artists (I do have my eye on a pair of Meghann Sottile earrings) check out the RJM store.
And low-key, this is building to some more Community happenings in the near future, so be on the lookout for *cough* new works *cough* really soon.
