Contain Neckpiece
The Contain series was made for the exhibiiton With Other Eyes curated by Beate Gegenwart which toured Wales in 2018. They were my pieces made in Seattle before I moved back to Australia in October 2018.
I typically use photography after ideation in my practice – through research I tease out my message, then I source images that represent my thinking. For this project I reversed this process, and started with photographs. Shipping containers have surrounded and fascinated me since I moved to the US port city of Seattle over six years ago. I cut my forms from the corrugated steel of a salvaged container, into scaled-down versions of the standard 20’ and 40’ units. I did not want to build containers, only echo their enigmatic presence, thus these works present a façade, my postcard of Seattle.
